Melanie Gandyra is an artist and illustrator with a unique approach to nature and the environment. She has also published books with Chronicle Books and Frances Lincoln, and her illustrations have been shortlisted for the World Illustration Awards multiple times. Her accolades include two gold medals at the Global Illustration Awards and exhibitions at Somerset House in London, a gallery in Beijing, and a theatre in Portugal.
Gandyra's recent work has expanded beyond the page, with installations like TRIMMT EUCH, which transformed an entire project space into a 'breathing landscape'. This installation, along with her other pieces, explores themes such as endangered plant species, weather systems, climate tipping points, and the complex relationship between humans and nature. Her method involves starting with detailed sketches in her sketchbook, which she then translates into larger works using a combination of coloured pencils, ink, acrylic, and marker.
One of her notable pieces, Kopchaos, features a figure whose head opens into a landscape, with plants and clouds erupting from the hair. Another piece, Hold Me Tight, showcases an endangered Tyrolean plant series with a tender approach, reminiscent of Victorian indoor gardens. These works demonstrate Gandyra's ability to blend precision and care with a deep understanding of the natural world.
Gandyra's dedication to her craft is evident in her upcoming projects. She is currently working on a book about Philippine Welser, a 16th-century Innsbruck figure known for her herb work.
